set himself on fire in central prague's vaclav place
to protest soviet russian suppression of the prodemocratic
"prague spring".
he died three days later.
as a sign of condolence and in solidarity with their czech comrades in spirit,
east german dissidents in public wore a pin
(shown above in a box with the czech colours, ".68" refers
to the climax and downfall year of the czech reforms).
the emblem depicts the capital letters "JP" and a bar reading
"Seid bereit" (be prepared), crowned by flaming fire.
the state security system was caught in dire straits
and reacted helplessly because
